Menuhin’s first recording on film was made in 1947. Shortly after World War II, the American producer Paul Gordon had approached the violinist with the idea of filming his concerts, offering an entirely new way of preserving them for posterity than the established medium of sound recording. Menuhin agreed at once, even though his father Moshe was not at all enthusiastic about the project. The film, entitled Concert Magic, was shot in the last month of 1947 at Charlie Chaplin’s former Hollywood studio.

Retour aux Sources. (Return to the Source) Yehudi Menuhin in the Soviet Union
This three-part documentary was produced towards the end of the Cold War. The Gorbachev era had begun, bringing perestroika and glasnost and leading to a new invitation for Menuhin to visit Russia.

The first episode follows the violinist and conductor Rozhdestvensky as they rehearse a monumental programme made up of Bach’s Triple Concerto (with Igor and Valery Oistrakh), the violin concertos of Beethoven and Bartók, and Tchaikovsky’s Sérénade mélancolique.

The second episode, The Birth of a Duo with the Russian pianist Viktoria Postnikova is a wonderful testimony to the collaboration between these two extraordinary musicians.

Finally, in the third episode, we discover a great deal about Menuhin’s insights as a conductor and the by no means conflict-free interaction between father and son while working on Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto. The concert itself is also included in its entirety.

Menuhin plays the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi with The Menuhin School orchestra, whilst a painter represents the music on canvas in real time. Each season in Vivaldi’s original score was accompanied by a sonnet: Menuhin himself recites the lyrics in two languages: English and French.
Complemented by the Brahms Violin Concerto recorded in 1982 at the Gewandhaus, Leipzig under the direction of Kurt Masur.

In 1994, Bruno Monsaingeon and Yehudi Menuhin enjoyed many long conversations at the violinist’s house in Mykonos, Greece, captured here on camera. A total of three hours of talks have been edited into 26 chapters of varying length and published in the film Conversations with Yehudi Menuhin – Mykonos, June 1994. Menuhin’s modesty, fine sense of humour, and bright serenity are all expressed in the talks he had with Monsaingeon in Mykonos. His faith in happiness as a state of inner balance and perfect desireless satisfaction – here it is all revealed. The fascination, which emanates from him, the reverence that is shown towards him and his music, applies not only to the artist, but also, and above all, to the man Menuhin.
