Previously known for writing the immortal theme to the classic sitcom Cheers, Craig Safan was a novel choice to score the 1984 sci-fi adventure The Last Starfighter, and while some elements of the music have dated poorly, it nevertheless remains one of the most intriguing and original cosmic-themed soundtracks of the post-Star Wars era. Safan emphasizes both halves of the space opera equation, employing an overstuffed orchestra to create a series of epic, heroic themes favoring time-honored melodic idioms over modern synthesizer beeps and blips--fanfare brass, sweeping strings and martial rhythms evoke the classic adventure scores of Hollywood's golden era, and save for a handful of ill-considered concessions to mid-'80s electronics, The Last Starfighter proves a surprisingly timeless and even traditional listening experience. Intrada's 1996 reissue is the definitive edition, roughly doubling the amount of material included on the previous Southern Cross release. ~ Jason Ankeny

クレイグ・サファン畢生の大傑作。勇壮なブラスによるメロディの炸裂の中に憂いを秘めたストリングスが絡み、スターウォーズ以降に数多く作られたシンフォニーオーケストラによるＳＦ映画のサウンドトラック作品の中でも断トツの傑作。当時はライトスタッフのサントラと並びよくＴＶ番組のバックに使われていました。後は「レモ」のサントラの再リリースに期待します。（数年前発売即注文しましたが結局入荷なりませんでした）
