Lost somewhat in the bounty of previously unreleased material distributed across the deluxe editions of Marvin Gayes 1971-1981 studio albums, this performance appeared in totality on the second disc for Whats Going On. Eighteen years later, newly mixed by John Morales, it gets an appropriate, separate release with in-depth contextualization from Gaye biographer David Ritz. Context here is crucial, and theres a lot of it. For starters, the occasion was Washington, D.C.s Marvin Gaye Day, the events of which culminated in the reluctantly present singers first concert in four years. Struck with stage fright, still deeply affected by the death of duet partner Tammi Terrell, and resentful of his hometown, he took to the stage of the then-new Kennedy Center to perform the entirety of Whats Going On, backed by most of the album contributors, including the Funk Brothers and the Andantes, and locally sourced musicians for strings and horns. The star begins with a 13-minute medley of nine hits from the 60s. The tempo on some of the hits is slowed, setting the tone for the run-through of Gayes year-old masterpiece. He erroneously starts with Right On instead of the title song, so the second side is played first. The sets emotional peak is therefore reached early with Wholy Holy, one of many instances where Gayes voice sounds unaffected by years away from the stage. Rather than end the set by promoting Gayes new single, Youre the Man, Gaye and company roll through second renditions of Inner City Blues and Whats Going On. Thats when it sounds like a proper celebration. ~ Andy Kellman

Originally released in 1971, WHAT'S GOING ON remains a landmark album, one that redefined music with powerful, anthemic songs that remain pertinent to this day. Before WHAT'S GOING ON, R&B albums were collections of singles, with secondary "filler" material rounding out the LPs. Marvin Gaye changed all this by releasing a concept album that went beyond the usual boy-meets-girl scenario, weaving together an aural collage of societal ills. "Crime is increasing/Trigger-happy policing," from "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," is as potent a line today as it was over 20 years ago, and with the country still divided over the Vietnam War, the title track became a rallying cry for peace. Dark, mercurial, and jazzy, WHAT'S GOING ON was as radical musically as it was conceptually. Layered with lush orchestrations, heavenly background vocals, and loose, fiercely grooving arrangements, WHAT'S GOING ON so surpassed anything previously known as soul music that it virtually reinvented the genre. The critical and commercial success of Gaye's opus also enabled other artists to break free from the creative shackles imposed by Motown and other companies, and to experience more autonomy in musical and thematic expression, thereby changing the industry. In short, the musical and historical significance of WHAT'S GOING ON cannot be overestimated; it was Gaye's masterpiece, and still stands as one of the greatest soul albums of all time.

こんな貴重な音源がまだ残っていたとは。音楽史に残る名盤 『ホワッツ・ゴーイン・オン』の1年後1972年5月1日にワシントンD.C.はJ.F.
