カザルス弦楽四重奏団は、1997年に結成、2000年ロンドン国司あ弦楽四重奏コンクール優勝、2002年ハンブルク・ブラームス国際弦楽四重奏コンクールで優勝し、またたく間にその実力を世界が認めることとなったカルテット。2007年に初来日、以降2009、2011、2014年に来日、2018年6月にはサントリーホール・チェンバーミュージック・ガーデン2018でベートーヴェン・チクルス(全曲演奏/全6回)に登場し、圧巻の演奏を披露しました。

The Cuarteto Casals cycle of Beethovens string quartets has been sufficiently unusual that even those discomfited by it may welcome the breath of fresh air they represent. The set is unique in several respects. The three volumes do not run through the quartets chronologically. Instead, each volume contains an early, middle, and late quartet united by a theme, in this case, Apotheosis. This is explained only in the most general way in the booklet, and its hard to see how this term applies to these particular quartets but not others. However, thats a minor issue compared to the Cuarteto Casals sound, produced by the combination of 18th century bows with modern instruments. From the historical performance movement, the group takes an avoidance of vibrato, except where an expressive quality is specifically called for, as in the first movement of the String Quartet No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 131. It is, in fact, in that quartet that the Cuarteto Casals is closest to normal, for it is a work in which Beethoven achieved a kind of transfigured melodicism, and first violinist Vera Martinez Mehner responds accordingly. The earlier quartets are entirely distinctive, with dancelike rhythms and articulations lending a sound that is flexible and sometimes wonderfully simple. The String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 (Serioso) loses none of the agitato specified in its final movement when it is played with a lighter touch, as the group does here. The early String Quartet No. 5 in A major, Op 18, No. 5, and String Quartet No. 6 in B flat major, Op. 18, No. 6, are songlike rather than bumptious, and the Cuarteto Casals offers one of their moments of lyrical ecstasy in the fourth-movement Adagio of the latter quartet, subtitled La Malinconia. Everywhere there are unique sonorities and conceptions, beautifully rendered by Harmonia Mundis engineers at the Mediapole Saint-Cesaire in Arles. This has the sound of a Beethoven cycle whose impact may take a few decades to be fully felt, and some may reject it outright, but listeners today can get in on the ground floor.
