2015年にノルウェーの名門オーケストラ、ベルゲン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の首席指揮者に就任し、絶賛されたエディンバラ国際音楽祭や7度の国際ツアー、数々のレコーディングを通じてベルゲン・フィルの魅力を世界に伝えてきた次代を担うマエストロ、エドワード・ガードナー。

そんな親密で良好な関係を深めているガードナーとベルゲン・フィルの強力タッグによる新録音は、2016年に録音され英グラモフォン誌で「エディターズ・チョイス」に選ばれた「グレの歌」(CHSA 5172)以来となるシェーンベルクのレコーディング。メーテルリンクの戯曲に基づく交響詩「ペレアスとメリザンド」と、ソプラノ歌手一人のみが演じるモノドラマ「期待」。作曲年代はわずか6年の隔たりしかないものの、後期ロマン派のスタイルによる「ペレアスとメリザンド」と、無調への転換後に書かれた「期待」という大きく異なる音楽で、シェーンベルクの深みと情熱を見事に描写していきます。

「期待」でソロを歌うのは、ポーランドとドイツのルーツを持つアメリカ出身のソプラノ、サラ・ヤクビアク。変幻自在のカラフルな声を特徴とし、ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙からは「ぜいたくな声、印象的なソプラノ」と絶賛され、ガードナー&ベルゲン・フィルとは、グラミー賞にもノミネートしたヤナーチェクの「グラゴル・ミサ」の録音(CHSA 5165)でも共演しています。

The output of Arnold Schoenberg, as listeners learn in music appreciation classes, falls into three periods: late Romantic, atonal/12-tone, and a later synoptic phase. Schoenberg, however, never conspicuously endorsed this classification, and he wrote various kinds of music in all phases. Conductor Edward Gardner, leading his by now highly pliable Bergen Symphony Orchestra, draws connections between the two works on this album, which were composed only six years apart. Yes, Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 3, is a tonal work, and Erwartung is not, but the two scores have much in common. The forest plays a role in both, and both are tales of obsessive love. Each work calls for large orchestras, often broken down into small groups, and Mahler is an influence on the scores. Gardners Pelleas is restless and quick, emphasizing the works unsettled psychological quality, and its link to Schoenbergs later music, in a fresh performance that works. Perhaps the biggest highlight here, though, is the performance of soprano Sara Jakubiak in Erwartung. This work, a kind of one-woman opera, has tended to attract powerhouse Wagner sopranos, but it does, after all, embody an inner monologue for which Schoenberg tried to capture an uncontrolled, stream-of-consciousness quality. Jakubiak turns up the volume only a few times, and the rest has a chamber sound thats more in line with the basic sense of the work. Chandos engineers do excellently at capturing this chamber quality in the large Grieghallen in Bergen, and the result is an album that will attract even listeners who dont particularly like Schoenberg. The hefty booklet does not contain an English text for Erwartung. Perhaps this was for space reasons, but there is no conveniently available copy online, and Chandos might have provided one.
