ロック・シーンにおける孤高のレジェンド、ニール・ヤング。年を重ねても尚、否、一層果敢に、ますます精力的に作品を発表し続ける彼が、Amazon Music HDでリリースするEP『THE TIMES』が、CDでも発売されることとなった。

今年6月に、ファンの間で最も謎に満ちた偉大なる"未発表アルバム"として語り継がれていた"幻の名盤"『HOMEGROWN』をリリースしたニール。今回発売となる『THE TIMES』 は、それに続く彼の今年2作目の作品であり、ライヴ・ストリーミングで配信してきた"Fireside Sessions"内の"Porch Episode"で演奏された楽曲をフィーチャーしたEPとなる。収録された楽曲は、彼が世に放ってきたロック史における重要プロテスト・ソングである「Ohio」や「Alabama」、「Southern Man」、そして「Campaigner」を中心に、2006年発表のアルバム『LIVING WITH WAR』に収録されていた「Looking For A Leader」の歌詞を今の時代に合わせてアップデートした「Looking For A Leader 2020」、『HOMEGROWN』に収録されていた「Little Wing」などが含まれ、さらにボブ・ディランの「The Times They Are A-Chagin' (時代は変わる)」のカヴァーも演奏されている。

本EPの元になった"Fireside Sessions"は、2020年に入ってからニール・ヤングがパートナーであるダリル・ハンナと共に制作してきたストリーミング・コンテンツである。自宅のポーチでアコースティック・ギター一本で弾き語る彼の姿を間近で捉えたこのセッションは、意外性のあるセット・リストとともにファンからの注目を集め、ローリング・ストーン誌からも"これまでの中で最高のライヴ・ストリーミング・パフォーマンス"と絶賛されているそう。そこから生まれた本作に収録されている楽曲を見れば、何故彼がこの作品を『THE TIMES』と名付けたのか、そして新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大と新しい生活様式、Black Lives Matter運動、そして秋の大統領選など、時代の大きな動きや変化に見舞われている2020年の米国で、これらの曲の一つ一つが、いかに鋭くまた深いメッセージを持っているのかが伝わってくるだろう。語りつくせぬ熱い思いを、溢れ出るクリエイティヴィティでサウンドに昇華していくニール・ヤングが、2020年のこの時代だからこそ、伝えたい歌の数々。その想いが本作『THE TIMES』には込められているのだ。

The Times is one of those times where Neil Young treats his music as a news bulletin: its an EP designed to address the confusion and chaos of 2020, perhaps offering a little nudge to audiences to go out and vote. Unlike either Ohio or 2006s Living with War, Neil didnt write new protest songs this time around. Instead, hes revived and occasionally rejiggered a bunch of his old politically minded songs, including Ohio and Lookin for a Leader, which made its debut on Living with War. Sitting alongside these two tunes are new solo acoustic versions of Alabama, Southern Man, and Campaigner, plus a cover of Bob Dylans The Times They Are A-Changin. (The EP closes with an exceptionally hushed version of Youngs Little Wing, which was unveiled on Homegrown, the scrapped 1975 album that finally saw the light of day earlier in 2020.) Nixons name and ghost hang heavy over these tunes, which draws attention to how Young has pointedly avoided writing a song addressing President Donald J. Trump by name; hes alluded to on the new lyrics for Lookin for a Leader, but neither Trump nor his challenger Joe Bidens names are mentioned, while Barack Obama is. Its a curious wrinkle on an EP thats a bit of a sideways rallying call for action, one designed to stir memories of past activism. Fittingly, it feels almost more nostalgic than modern. Youngs voice quivers slightly and by supporting himself with just a guitar, he seems slightly fragile, a quality that gives these simple, straightforward covers a subtle new dimension. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
