ブルックナー4番第1稿の魅力をここまで発揮できるとは!
ロト&ギュルツェニヒ管の神業!!

昨2022年2月に第7番をリリースして大好評を博したロトとギュルツェニヒ管弦楽団のブルックナー交響曲シリーズ、待望の第2弾の登場です。
曲は人気の第4番ですが、通常版ではない1874年第1稿を選んでいるのが注目です。

ロトとギュルツェニヒ管弦楽団は2022年7月の日本公演で同曲を披露し、壮絶な演奏で聴衆の度肝を抜いたことは記憶に新しいですが、当アルバムはケルンでのライヴ。
やはりロトならではのリズム感の良さと豪快にオーケストラを鳴らしきる芸風がDXD録音で迫ります。

交響曲第4番「ロマンティック」の1874年第1稿は1878/80年稿と多くの点で異なり、とりわけ第3楽章は全く別の音楽となっています。
ブルックナー自身この版を未整理とみなし、演奏不可能、楽器の重ねすぎで不明瞭と大改訂を決めたといわれます。
自由さと過激さを高く買う向きもありますが、これまでの演奏は雑然とした印象を与えるものが多かったのも事実でした。

ロトとギュルツェニヒ管弦楽団との演奏はそうした欠点が全く気にならず、むしろ粗削りな原石的魅力を放ちます。
2024年のブルックナー生誕200年に向け、交響曲全集プロジェクトを進めるなかでも注目の一枚と申しましょう。

The Symphony No. 4 in E flat major, with its Beethovenian opening and four relatively clearly structured movements, ranks as probably Bruckners most popular. Yet, the original 1874 version heard here is comparatively rare; it was not performed in full until 1975, and recordings remain sparse. Compared with the more usual later versions, it features a Scherzo that Bruckner later discarded completely, and the finale was heavily reworked. It mostly lacks the big emotional payoffs that led Bruckner to be called out for bows after each movement at the 1880 premiere of a revised version, but it is compelling in its own right, and conductor Francois-Xavier Roth, leading the Gurzenich-Orchester Koln, catches its slightly mysterious quality. Sample the Scherzo, dubbed the "Alphorn Scherzo," for its opening horn call. The movement, however, develops into a somewhat nervous dialogue between the horns and the orchestra, never settling into the hunting-horn color of the later Scherzo versions. This is the second in an ongoing series of Bruckner symphonies from Roth and the Gurzenich-Orchester, which delivers top-notch playing in the transparent textures favored naturally enough by Roth; he is better known as a historical-instrument specialist. Roth is emerging as one of the hot conductors of the day, and here, with a rather deliberate, detailed reading of the Fourth, he penetrates the works creative origins. ~ James Manheim
