ハイドン生誕300周年にあたる2032年までに、この「交響曲の父」が残した107曲の交響曲全てを録音してゆくジョヴァンニ・アントニーニの注目企画、第13弾に高音質アナログ盤が登場。
エステルハージ侯爵家での30年近くに及ぶ現役活動中、ウィーンから遠く離れた侯爵領で世評を気にせず試行錯誤を繰り返しながら書かれたハイドンの一連の交響曲は、多彩な音楽作法で聴きどころが尽きませんが、今回はその中でも特に味わい深い中期前半の3曲を厳選。各パートのソロが多く聴きどころに事欠かない長大な第31番「ホルン信号」、独立した管楽器パートが一対のオーボエとホルンだけの小規模編成で変幻自在の展開が続く第59番「火事」、打楽器が入らないオリジナル版の演奏でも勇壮なスケールを存分に感じさせる第48番「マリア・テレジア」、といずれもアントニーニ自身の楽団であるイル・ジャルディーノ・アルモニコならではの、全奏者の個性が生かされながら豊かな一体感あふれる解釈が映える作品ばかり。特に「ホルン信号」では、圧倒的かつ痛快な吹奏でデュナーミク豊かなサウンド作りをみせる4人のナチュラルホルン奏者たちの活躍もさることながら、コントラバスやヴィオラにまでソロが出てくる終楽章での大規模室内楽風アンサンブルが絶妙で、個々の楽器の妙味をじっくり味わえます。

The Alpha labels Haydn 2032 project is a complete cycle of Haydns 107 symphonies, set to be completed in 2032. The set features conductor Giovanni Antonini, leading the historical performance group Il Giardino Armonico, and releases so far have yielded many compelling moments. This volume, the 13th, may make an especially good place to start for listeners wishing to sample the series. The sound of Haydns natural horns, in these works written to get Prince Esterhazy and his friends in the mood for a hunting trip (or to mark a successful one), is especially distinctive among performances of Haydns works on historical instruments. These horns show up in several Haydn symphonies, including the Symphony No. 59 in A major heard here, but the most spectacular instance is the Symphony No. 31 in D major, subtitled "Hornsignal." Plunge right in and sample the first movement with its blazing horn fanfares, clear and compelling in the hands of Antoninis hornists. This is an extraordinary work in Haydns oeuvre, featuring not only hunting horns but also a wide variety of other solo passages, all captured with a keen sense of Haydns humor and sense of surprise, here especially abundant. Each album in the series contains several Haydn symphonies (here, the third one is the Symphony No. 48 in C major, rightly given a very different flavor), plus one work by another composer that is relevant in some way. On some streaming versions of this release, that extra work is a Concerto a tre by Telemann for the unlikely combination of recorder, horn, and continuo; the balance is exquisitely handled.
