ヘンデルのオラトリオ中、最も人気の高い「メサイア」。聖書から歌詞をとったイエス・キリストの生涯を描く大作です。ヘンデルのオラトリオの大多数は劇場用に書かれており、どれもオペラに近いものですが、この「メサイア」だけは例外で、ヘンデルの全作品の中でも数少ない宗教的な内容を持っています。17世紀当時の英国ではオラトリオの人気は低かったのですが、ヘンデルはオラトリオにイタリア・オペラ的な華麗さを持ち込み、1718年、最初に英語のテキストを用いた「エスター」は批評家に"宗教的茶番"と酷評されたものの、ヘンデルは作品の出来栄えにひそかな自信を抱いたようです。この「メサイア」は当時慣例である、他の作曲家の作品や自身の作品からの借用や転用も多く見られますが、「ハレルヤ・コーラス」を始めとした壮麗な旋律は、現在でも合唱作品の最高傑作として讃えられています。このボルティモア交響楽団による演奏はモダン楽器を使用、序曲ではソロ・ヴァイオリンが活躍するなど至るところに工夫が凝らされています。
