奔放な解釈、繊細な表現が高く評価されるカティア・ブニアティシヴィリの新アルバム「Labyrinth=迷宮」。彼女のお気に入りを集めたというこのアルバムですが、とにかく選曲がユニーク。クープラン、スカルラッティ、バッハなどのバロック期の作品からモリコーネ、ペルト、ゲンスブールをはじめとした近現代作品まで幅広い時代から多彩な曲が並びます。中にはあの「4分33秒」まで。アルバム・コンセプトは"多彩で気軽に聞ける幅広い聴衆にアピールする1枚"とあり、いつもなら聴き手を翻弄するブニアティシヴィリも今回は方向転換を図ったようですが・・・。

冒頭の「デボラ」のテーマから想定外の世界に引きずり込まれます。低音の深い一撃で始まるおなじみの旋律。旋律そのものは美しいのですが、纏う雰囲気があまりにも不可思議。良く知っているはずの曲なのに・・・。その時、すでに聴き手の心は迷宮に入り込んでいます。サティやショパンのゆったりとした曲が続き、リゲティで感覚を揺さぶられ、突如バッハで現実の世界に戻されます。ここでは彼女の姉グヴァンツァがデュオに参加。その後も基本的にゆったりとした曲でブニアティシヴィリは聴き手を異世界へと誘います。彼女が見せる様々な異世界を堪能したあと、ジョン・ケージの「4分33秒」で現実の音を少しだけ。最後はバッハのアダージョで締めくくるという1枚。ブニアティシヴィリの個性はますます磨きがかかっています。

Pianist Khatia Buniatishvili specialized mostly in virtuoso repertory in the early years of her tenure with the Sony Classical label, but she goes in a different direction with Labyrinth, a collection of mostly slow, reflective pieces from various periods and in various styles. The labyrinth involved might be a winding path through musical styles or through an individual soul. The program is of the sort that one shouldnt try to hard to pin down; Buniatishvili posted on social media (October 9, 2020) that the voice you hear is the voice of a human being -- my voice, your voice, but its quite evocative. Buniatishvili makes turns through Bach, jazz, Romantic music, contemporary pieces, including a large Philip Glass excerpt, and more. Yet for the most part, she maintains the sense of a thread connecting the pieces, although some may feel that the four-hands arrangement of the Badinerie from the Bach Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067, where she teams with her sister, Gvantsa Buniatishvili, adds material that breaks the mood. The meditative quality reaches its peak, in a sense, with the inclusion of John Cages 433 -- four minutes and 33 seconds of silence, wherein listeners are invited to contemplate their sonic environments as the time elapses. Its an unorthodox choice, especially on recordings, but its placement here is apt. Did she sit at the keyboard for the requisite time? Who can know? Sonys sound, from the Pierre Boulez Room in the Paris Philharmonie, is ideal. Fans of the fiery Buniatishvili will be intrigued by this new path from the pianist.
