ウィーン・フィル・サマーナイト・コンサート2021

今年のサマーナイト・コンサートでも音楽の灯を消さずに進み続けるウィーン・フィル。
ハーディングとレヴィットがダブル・デビュー。

毎年ウィーンの聴衆を熱狂させる記念碑的コンサートのライヴ。ニューイヤー・コンサートと並ぶウィーン・フィルの名物行事で、2004年の開催以来、初夏のウィーンの風物詩として定着している「ウィーン・フィル・サマーナイト・コンサート」。ユネスコの世界遺産にも指定されているシェーンブルン宮殿を舞台に行われるオープンエアの演奏会は、世界の60カ国以上に生中継(もしくは録画放送)されています。
このコンサートはこれまで、ゲルギエフ、バレンボイム、ヴェルザー=メスト、マゼール、エッシェンバッハ、メータ、ドゥダメル等が登場など、錚々たる指揮者陣の起用というだけでなく、ピアニストのラン・ランやテノールのカウフマン、ソプラノのネトレプコらも登場していることからも、ウィーン・フィルにとって最も重要なコンサートという位置付けがなされていることがわかります。
コロナ禍でも前に進み続けるウィーン・フィルの姿勢は昨年11月の来日公演の敢行やニューイヤー・コンサートの無観客開催で世界的に大きな話題となりましたが、今年のサマーナイト・コンサートも、2020年同様感染予防対策を考慮して聴衆を3000人に限定して開催される予定で、医療関係者と教育関係者が招待されることになっています。
ソニークラシカルは2013年からこのサマーナイト・コンサートをCDと映像ソフトで発売しており、その第9回目となる今年2021年は英国出身のダニエル・ハーディングに指揮が託されます。2004年にマーラーの交響曲第10番で鮮烈なウィーン・フィル・デビューを飾って以来、常連指揮者として共演を重ねているハーディングが同コンサート初登場となります。
今年のテーマはドイツ語でFernweh=遠方への憧れ、つまり「遠くへ行きたい」ということで、ヴェルディ(イタリア・シチリア島)、ラフマニノフ(ロシア)、バーンスタイン(ニューヨーク)、シベリウス(フィンランド)、エルガー(イギリス)、ドビュッシー(ギリシャ)、ホルスト(宇宙)という外国への憧れを音楽で満たすような彩り豊かな選曲も楽しみ。このうちラフマニノフとシベリウスは何とウィーン・フィルが演奏家で取り上げるのはこのサマーナイト・コンサートが初めてという点も興味深いところです。
注目は、今最も熱いピアニスト、イゴール・レヴィットがラフマニノフ「パガニーニ狂詩曲」でウィーン・フィルと初今共演&サマーナイト・コンサート初登場というダブル・レビューを果たすことでしょう。レヴィットの「パガニーニ狂詩曲」といえば、日本の音楽ファンにとっては、2017年9月、東京文化会館におけるキリル・ペトレンコ指揮バイエルン国立歌劇場管弦楽団との鮮烈な共演ぶりがいまだに記憶に残っています。その時のインタビューで、「(この曲なら)このロビーですぐに弾いてくれと言われても大丈夫だよ」と作品を完璧に手のうちに入れていることを自信たっぷりに語っていた鬼才ならではの集中力溢れる演奏が期待できます。レヴィットによるオーケストラとの共演CDがソニークラシカルから発売されるのは今回が初めてとなります。

Credit to Vienna Philharmonics house label, which recorded the orchestras annual Sommernachtskonzert (Summer Night Concert) at Schonnbrun Castle on June 18, 2021, mastered it (not incidental in a punishing sound environment), and had it on the market by early August. The Sommernachtskonzert and its New Years Day cousin are nothing if not traditional, and their conductors tend to make repeat appearances. Once in a while, however, there is the fear that audiences may say, Been there, done that, and thus an attempt to shake things up, at least moderately. Thats what happened in 2021, with new conductor Daniel Harding, very little Viennese music apart from Beethovens Fur Elise and the standard Wiener Blut finale of Johann Strauss II, a major star appearance from pianist Igor Levit, and a relative novelty in the form of Leonard Bernsteins Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Even granted that Bernstein is pretty much standard repertory by now, even in Central Europe, listeners may feel that the venerable Philharmonic is a bit ill at ease snapping its fingers, and that the work doesnt quite fit its surroundings. Nevertheless, many parts of this non-Viennese Vienna Summer Night Concert are quite engagingly executed. Levit offers a brilliantly virtuosic Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43, and the Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity movement from Holsts The Planets, Op. 32, is a festive piece that fits the program in an unexpected way. Harding fills the program with late Romantic/early 20th century pieces that embody a summer atmosphere in one way or another, like Debussys Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, and if the music is unexpected, it is also generally sharp. Dollars (or euros) to donuts, the 2022 concert will be more conventional, but change is good.
