世界を80日間で一周しようと試みるイギリス人資産家フィリアス・フォッグの奮闘を描いたジュール・ヴェルヌの冒険
小説『八十日間世界一周』。この小説が出版された1873年の時点では、船と陸路による世界一周旅行は命がけの冒険で、主人公がイギリスから東へ向かってアラビア半島、インド、中国をめぐり、日本(横浜)から太平洋を渡りアメリカへ、そして大西洋を越えて帰国する物語は大ヒットとなりました。
小説はすぐに舞台化され、ウィーンのカール劇場で1875年3月に舞台上演された際には、ここに収録されたスッペの音楽が使われました。スッペは、主人公フォッグが経験する異国での風物や冒険を音で描き、ゴールド・ラッシュに沸くアメリカの印象も取り込んでいて、現代の映画音楽のよう。このサルヴィによる演奏では台詞を省き、スッペのカラフルで雄弁な音楽を十分に楽しめます。
