作曲家の生誕300周年にあたる2032年に向けて、ハイドンの交響曲全てを録音してゆくアントニーニのプロジェクトの11作目にハイスペック・アナログ盤が登場。中期の作品が中心となっていたこれまでの選曲から一歩進んで、作曲家50過ぎの重要作2作が軸となるプログラムを高音質でお楽しみいただけます。
テーマは「パリの人々のお気に入り」。オーケストラ演奏会が新たな娯楽として注目され始めていた当時のパリでは、ドイツ語圏で書かれた交響曲が人気を集めていましたが、その活況に大きく貢献した作曲家の一人がハイドンでした。彼の交響曲第82～87番の6曲は、かのフランスの首都で開催されていた演奏会の一つコンセール・ド・ラ・ロージュ・オランピークのために作曲されたため『パリ交響曲集』と呼ばれており、今回は「熊」の綽名で知られる大編成向け第82番と、やや小ぶりの編成が緻密に活かされた第87番の2曲がこのセットから選ばれています。他の2曲はいずれも初期作品で、それらの作曲に至る「前史」となった重要作。その経緯を含め、指揮者アントニーニと音楽学者モーリッツ=バウアーによって現場経験と最新研究をふまえ書かれた解説文(独・英・仏語)は興味深い内容となっています。バーゼル室内管弦楽団は今回、コンサートマスターや管楽器のトップ奏者に平素イル・ジャルディーノ・アルモニコで活躍するプレイヤーたちも編入、ピリオド楽器を使う意義が十全に伝わってくるメリハリの効いた解釈はここでも絶好調。初期のエステルハージ宮廷楽団のサイズまで員数を絞った第2番のクリスピーさから、トランペットとティンパニが存分に存在感を発揮する「熊」の豪奢な響きまで、変幻自在の創意が秘められているハイドン世界の魅力を存分にお楽しみください。

The "Haydn 2032" symphony cycle by conductor Giovanni Antonini and the Kammerorchester Basel has been both artistically and commercially successful. Its a monster undertaking (to conclude in the year 2032), but so far, Antonini has devised fresh programs and executed them well. He avoids both the bare numerical sequence and early-middle-late groupings, instead choosing ideas that illustrate artistic ideas in the air. For this release, its the "gout Parisien" ("Parisian taste"), which interacted with the German and Austrian musical worlds over many decades. Two of the four works here are among Haydns so-called Paris symphonies, written for Paris Loge Olympique Orchestra conducted by Joseph Boulogne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the greatest Black composer of the day. This was an ensemble with a then unheard-of 40 violins. The Kammerorchester Basel seems a bit underpowered for this, but Antonini steps up with big, Beethovenian readings that emphasizes the horns. Try the last movement of the Symphony No. 82 in C major, Hob. 1/82, where the C pedal point becomes strikingly relentless. The other two works have connections with Paris; the Symphony No. 2 in C major, Hob. 1/2, was published there (and was Haydns earliest published symphony), while the Symphony No. 24 in D major, Hob. 1/24, was the first Haydn symphony performed in the City of Light. The four works are not stereotypically in the French Classical style, but they were certainly to the taste of Parisians, and they hang together in the 2032 series typically effective way.
