デニス・ボーヴェルは、ダブ・ポエトリーからラヴァーズ・ロック、ポスト・パンク、ディスコ、ポップなど、幅広い音楽ジャンルを網羅する多作で折衷的なキャリアを送ってきた。この新しいコンピレーションは、ボーヴェルがジャ・サファ―・サウンドシステムに関わっていた時期とその直後、主に1976年から1980年にかけての期間に焦点を当て、ディープ・カットやあまり知られていないバージョンを深く掘り下げています。特に、ラヴァーズ・ロックを象徴する名曲「Silly Games」(ジャネット・ケイ)の素晴らしい未発表ダブ・ヴァージョンも収録されている。ベルリンのDubplates & Masteringにて、丹念に修復・リマスタリングされたこれらの数十年前のトラックは、クリアでダイナミックなサウンドとなり、リスナーをボーヴェルの天才的なプロデュース力とアレンジ力の世界へと誘うだろう。

このアルバムの制作は、2018年にデニス・ボーヴェルがロンドンのウォルサムストウにあるGeneral Echo Reggae Discoを訪れたことがきっかけだった。そこで出会った人々との交流から、彼の貴重な音源を掘り起こすプロジェクトが始動した。長年にわたり、レコード探しや楽曲の選曲、そしてコロナ禍といった困難を乗り越え、ようやく完成したのがこのアルバム『Sufferer Sounds』である。デニス・ボーヴェルの音楽に対する情熱と、彼の卓越したミキシング技術が凝縮された作品となっている。特に、このアルバムでは、デニス・ボーヴェルの独特なサウンド作りが際立っている。彼のハーモニーやメロディー、そしてエフェクトの使い方など、彼の才能が遺憾なく発揮された作品と言えるだろう。

Reggae producer and musician Dennis Bovell was a key contributor to the early days of dub, setting up shop in London and helping define the U.K. co-reflection of reggae music trends happening in Jamaica during the 1970s. Bovells breed of dub had its own character, sometimes psychedelic like Lee "Scratch" Perrys outer-reaches remixing, but with a sturdier sense of control, and sometimes taking on some of the rougher edges of the nascent punk and post-punk bands he produced records for. Sufferer Sounds compiles rare dub tracks from Bovells run at his Jah Sufferer Sound System, many of them recorded between 1976 and 1980. The styles and applications go in multiple directions throughout the course of Sufferer Sounds. "Blood Dem" has a classic 70s dub sound, with skeletal, reverb-bathed drums and bass occasionally interrupted by scatters of tape-delayed vocals, guitar, or organ. Its a brooding rocksteady tune with all of the details subtracted masterfully, landing in roughly the same place as dubs by Jamaican producers like King Tubby or Scientist, but far more minimal. Tracks like the horn-heavy "Compelled" (credited to Cosmic Idren) have the same weighty rocksteady push and tight arrangements as Bovells work on dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnsons essential late-70s and early-80s albums. The Young Lions roots reggae interpretation of Dave Brubecks jazz standard "Take Five" is blasted into the cosmos as "Take Dub," and one of Bovells biggest chart successes, the 1979 disco/lovers rock fusion hit "Silly Games" is presented here as the spaced-out version "Game of Dubs." Bovells distinctively British counterpoint to Jamaican dub is on full display throughout Sufferer Sounds, as is the breadth of his creative dexterity. Its a welcome shift from the excellent but after a while samey warehouses of Jamaican dub productions from the same time, offering solid sounds in the dub tradition, but from a separate perspective. ~ Fred Thomas
