Before working on the television series Heated Rivalry, Quebecois singer/songwriter Peter Peter (Peter Roy) had followed his muse from a melancholy, guitar-based indie pop to a mix of dancy electro-pop and atmospheric synth pop across the 2010s. With his fifth album, 2024s Ether, he embraced an 80s-inspired electronic pop that maintained a certain yearning quality present throughout his career. Thats the album that came to the attention of show creator Jacob Tierney and made Peter a smart choice as composer for a romantic drama about rival professional ice hockey players who develop a hidden, intermittent relationship. Combining the ambient sound of 80s synthesizer scores like Blade Runner, Legend, and Electric Dreams with material featuring more urgent, techno-oriented club beats, Peter had his first international hit with this over-hour-long, first-season soundtrack. The pulsing main theme "Rivalry" establishes an electronic palette but is later contrasted by longing, shimmery tracks like the episodic "Heartbeat" (I-IV), among many other cues. Also included and worked seamlessly into the part beat-driven, part atmospheric, chronological track list is the original song "Its You," a dreamy, echo-heavy ballad that features simple lyrics along the lines of stay, dont go, its you. Both the song and the score won Canadian Screen Awards in 2026. ~ Marcy Donelson
