The Story of Michael and Tanya is the fifth album by the award-winning the War and Treaty, and their debut on Atlantic Outpost. Wounded Iraq war veteran Michael Trotter, Jr. and gospel/R&B singer Tanya Blount met at a music festival in 2010. They married in 2014, moved from Albion, Michigan to Nashville and released debut album The Healing Tide in 2018. Their music covers vast stylistic and lyric territory; it embraces Black gospel, soul, country, blues, Americana, R&B, and adult contemporary pop with searing emotional honesty, spiritual sophistication, and hooks. The Story of Michael and Tanya offers fingerpopping truth about their marriage, relationship, personal triumphs, contradictions, and trials in ten songs. Michael Trotter, Jr. is the albums executive producer and personally helmed the boards on most tracks. Opener "Litty" is introduced by strings and guest Whoopi Goldbergs narrated intro. Written by the pair, its next-level soul channels Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. Tanya Trotter delivers the first verse, outlining where they were and how they got to where they are. Single "Dont Say Goodbye" is a paean to the individual members need for committed love, with seamless vocal harmony and poignant lyrics in a musical palette that recalls 70s-era Gladys Knight. Tanya co-wrote "You Cant Hurt Me Anymore" with Babyface -- he also co-produced the track. Its searing lyrics resonate through Americana and soul in waltz time. On "Shouldnt Have," Michael repents for things he shouldnt have done: from unaccounted-for disappearances to taking another woman to dinner: "I crossed the line/I did it this time/How could I lose control?" Tanya mirrors him: "You crossed the line/You did it this time...." Both confession and indictment co-exist, creating unresolved tension. Valerie June and Wynonna join the couple on the honky tonk country-waltz "Reclaim Your Time," co-written by the duo and Zakk Garner. Each singer takes a heartworn verse and helps out on the harmony. Wynonnas big voice inhabits the humorous lyric exhorting a wronged woman to take a losers wallet and credit cards before sending him back to mama. "Lay This Bottle Down," by Tanya and Garner, is also a honky tonk heartbreaker complete with whining pedal steel and Michaels protagonist talking to an empty glass about his agony and regret. The deep, bluesy soul in "Holy Ghost Fire" finds Michael as a spiritual vigilante seeking to caution and protect his beloved as Tanya affirms her love. Closer "High Heels" is a string- and horn-drenched rave-up connecting soul, rock, and a church choir. Tanyas performance is commanding, reflecting the difficulties of everyday life as Michael claims happiness as her loyal soldier: "Baby Mama with no drama thats how she became my wife/I’ve signed up for her army/I’m a soldier for life." While each of the duos albums has garnered worthy attention and built their reputation, The Story of Michael and Tanya is their masterpiece and will elevate them to the next level of artistic and commercial success. ~ Thom Jurek
