ここ日本でも注目を集め始めているグラミー賞を3度受賞したシンガー、ソングライター、そしてミュージシャンであるビリー・ストリングス。2017年のデビュー以来、2017年にデビューを果たして以来、2020年の第63回グラミー賞で最優秀ブルーグラス・アルバムを受賞し、2022年と2023年のアメリカーナ・ミュージック・アウォードでアーティスト・オブ・ジ・イヤーを受賞。さらに3年連続でインターナショナル・ブルーグラス・ミュージック・アウォードのエンターテイナー・オブ・ジ・イヤーを受賞するなど、注目を集め続けている彼をGQ誌は「ここ数十年で最も熱いルーツ・ミュージックの現象」と称賛し、Pitchfork誌は「ブルーグラスの神童」と評している。2024年に発表された前作『HIGHWAY PRAYERS』は、米ビルボードのトップ・アルバム・セールス・チャートで初登場1位を記録した他、第68回グラミー賞で3度目のグラミー賞を受賞、さらに2年連続となる「最優秀ブルーグラス・アルバム賞」を獲得した。その彼が約2年振りとなる待望のニューアルバム『SO MUCH FOR GOODBYES』を発売する。

ビリー・ストリングスとT・ボーン・バーネットがプロデュースを手がけたこの全16曲収録の新作は、彼の極めてパーソナルな時期を投影したものであり、音楽的に最も成熟し、内省的な、これまでの集大成と言える作品に仕上がっている。アルバムからはリード・トラックとして、ストリングスとポール・ホフマンとの共作「Burn The Other End」がリリースされたばかり。また、ジャケットには昨年亡くなったというストリングスの母、デブラ・アポストルが手がけたオリジナルのアートワークが添えられている。
「このアルバムは、母を称えるために作った。人生における、この極めて重大な喪失の時期にしっかりと向き合って受け入れ、そこからアートを生み出すためだ。傷心を曲へと昇華させながら、これまでもずっとそうしてきたように、ギターを心の拠り所として使った。ギターは、つらい時期にいつも寄り添い、支えてくれた。そしてこれからもずっとそうだろう……俺が別れを告げるその時が来るまでは」
アルバムについて、彼はそのように語っている。

Riding a wave of adulation for the crossover success of the chart-topping Highway Prayers, Billy Strings began 2025 in peak mode, selling out stadiums across America. Over the past decade, the Michigan-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist has been a transformative force in bluegrass, gradually ascending from local phenomenon to become the genres modern-day ambassador as well as one of its most reliable innovators. He was on tour in Lexington, Kentucky when he received the news his mother had died from an accidental drug overdose, the same fate that befell his birth father three decades earlier. The plague of addiction has been a part of Strings story nearly all his life, inspiring him to eventually get sober in 2016, right before his career took off. So Much for Goodbyes is both a follow-up to Highway Prayers and a tribute to his late mother, Debra Apostol, whose original artwork adorns the albums cover. Like his last album, it features a notable co-producer, in this case, T-Bone Burnett, whose veteran presence helps shepherd Strings through his emotional nexus while bringing years of taste and connections to the sessions. But where Highway Prayers was a sprawling, almost psychedelic affair, this album is more muted and inward-looking, with a maturity not entirely due to his mothers death, though deeply shaded by it. Opening with the warm, world-weary ramble of "Im One of Those," Strings cycles through a number of moods on the records front half, from the artful intensity of "Burn the Other End" to the old-time gospel of "Light the Way." The arrangements are mostly framed in classic string band style with the occasional barnburner showpiece like "Bluewater Breakdown" or the progressive "Lucid Daydream." He hasnt abandoned the wild innovations of previous records, hes just a little more subtle about them, allowing himself to process and heal through the music. This is most apparent on the standout "Still I Crash," a heartbreakingly direct ballad sung unaccompanied to his mom. Its placed late in the sequence and is surrounded by more-uptempo numbers, though its not the last word on his loss. "Remember to Cry" has the speed and twang of vintage bluegrass, with lyrics that reflect on the immediacy of his heartache: "Well, its never the ones you see comin that knock you right down to your knees/Instead, its the shot that hits the blind spot that you were the last one to see." The record ends with "Debras Waltz," a poignant instrumental ode at turns bittersweet and lilting. Like most of Strings albums, So Much for Goodbyes runs a little too long, a trait thats come to be expected and, especially in this case, forgiven. Hes got a lot on his mind: loss, grief, growing up, and becoming a parent himself. Matching the prodigious musical ability that has been apparent all along is one of his best collections of songs to date. ~ Timothy Monger
