〈TROJAN RECORDS〉の歴史を掘り起こすディープなコレクション・ボックス『REGGAE BUSINESS』

英国にジャマイカの音楽を紹介し、音楽シーンやカルチャーに大きな影響を与えた老舗レゲエ･レーベル、TROJAN RECORDS。60年代後半から70年代前半にかけてイギリスで巻き起こった文化的、そして音楽的革命の中、ジャマイカン・ミュージック旋風を巻き起こした彼らの歴史を掘り起こすディープなコレクションが登場した。

1968年、アイランド･レコードの創設者でもあるクリス・ブラックウェルと、ビート＆コマーシャル・レコーズのオーナー、リー・ゴスパルによって創設されたレゲエ連門レーベル、TROJAN RECORDS。レーベルの名前の由来となっているのは、ジャマイカのDJ/プロデューサー、デューク・リードが自身のサウンド・システムを運ぶのに使っていたトラックだといわれている。そのデューク･リードが自身のレーベルからリリースした作品を英国でリリースすることからスタートしたレーベルや、やがて、リー”スクラッチ”ペリーやデスモンド・デッカー、ボブ･マーリー、プリンス･バスター、ジミー･クリフなどのアーティストやその楽曲を世界に広めていくようになった。

トロージャンのジャマイカ音楽は英国のユース･カルチャーに受け入れられ、1970年代に入ると数々のヒットをチャートに送り込む。その中には、1971年にレーベル初の全英1位となったデイヴ＆アンセル・コリンズの「ダブル・バレル」や、ブルース・ラフィン、ザ・パイオニアーズ、そしてスキンヘッズたちから高い支持を集めるアップセッターズの楽曲が含まれていた。また彼らは、デニス･ブラウンやグレゴリー・アイザック、そしてボブ・マーリー＆ザ・ウェイラーズなど、同時ジャマイカ以外ではほとんどその存在を知られていなかったアーティストにスポットライトをあて、後に彼らが世界的な成功を収めるきっかけを作ることになる。

創立から半世紀を経てリリースされるのが、4枚のCD、4枚のアナログに7インチ・アナログ・シングルからなる『REGGAE BUSINESS』だ。Trojan Recordsの膨大なアーカイヴから発掘されたレア・トラックを集めた2枚組コンピレーション『FROM THE VAULTS』のVOL.1とVOL.2、そしてレーベルから生まれたレゲエ＆ダンスホール・ヒットを集めた2枚組アナログ作品『REGGAE HOTSHOTS』と『DO THE REGGAE』を中心に構成された本ボックスは、Trojan Recordsの代表的ヒット・ナンバーからディープなレア・トラックまでを網羅したファン垂涎のコレクションとなるだろう。さらにボックスには、「54-46Was My Number」の両A面7インチ・アナログ・シングル、そして写真等を多数交えながらレーベルの歴史を辿る90ページのブックレットやポスター、2枚のポストカード等を収録。イギリスのジャマイカ移民とワーキングクラスの間で熱狂的に支持され、1970年末の2トーン・ムーヴメント、そして1980年代前半のスカ・リヴァイバルでも注目を浴び続けたレーベルの歴史を知る上で貴重な音楽的資料となる作品と呼べるだろう。
